Woodlands South MRT Public Art with TECO Vitreous Enamel Panels

Woodlands South MRT Vitreous Enamel Panels by TECO – A Promise to Myself

Area: 7,000 m² | Year of Completion: 2020

Project Overview – TECO’s Vitreous Enamel Panels at Woodlands South MRT

Woodlands South MRT Station, part of Singapore’s Thomson-East Coast Line, showcases the landmark public artwork A Promise to Myself by artist Kng Mian Tze. The station’s architectural identity, together with over 7,000 m² of vitreous enamel panels supplied by TECO, demonstrates how engineering innovation and community engagement come together in one of Singapore’s most distinctive MRT projects.

Artwork Concept – Connecting Community & Future

The artwork builds on the Penrose tiling-inspired design of the station, transforming geometric patterns into a participatory community project.

  • 50 participants (students & residents) made a 10-year personal promise, expressed through drawings and symbols.
  • These promises were digitised and integrated into pentagon motifs on TECO’s vitreous enamel panels, forming the centerpiece of star-shaped designs.
  • The installation reflects both the daily journeys of commuters and their personal aspirations for the future.

Design & Community Integration

  • Concourse Feature Wall: 10 residents’ promises displayed with a legend wall showing original writings and drawings.
  • Four Entrances (Colour-Coded for Wayfinding):
    • Entrance A – Yellow: Christchurch Secondary & Sports School students
    • Entrance B – Green: Innova Primary School & Junior College students
    • Entrance C – Brown: Local residents (ages 30–70)
    • Entrance D – Blue: Woodgrove Secondary School students

This design approach turned the MRT station into a living reminder of personal growth, blending art, architecture, and community.

TECO’s Contribution – Vitreous Enamel Panels for Lasting Performance

TECO’s vitreous enamel panels were selected for their proven advantages:

  • Durability against corrosion, fire, and heavy daily usage
  • Colour brilliance to preserve both architectural geometry and participant artworks
  • Low maintenance qualities, ideal for high-traffic MRT environments

With this project, TECO reinforced its track record in Singapore MRT projects, delivering panels that combine technical excellence, artistic integration, and community value.
